What a Well Pump Does
A well pump draws water from underground — from your well — and delivers it into your home's plumbing system. If you're on a private well, you have a well pump. There's no other way to get water from the ground to your taps. Well pumps come in two main types:
- Submersible pumps sit deep inside the well, pushing water up. They're the most common type for modern wells and are efficient, quiet, and long-lasting.
- Jet pumps sit above ground and use suction to pull water up. They're typically used for shallow wells (less than 25 feet deep) or older installations.
What a Booster Pump Does
A booster pump doesn't draw water from a well. It takes water that's already in your plumbing — from a municipal supply, a storage tank, or a low-pressure source — and boosts the pressure so it reaches every fixture with adequate flow. If you're on city water but your upstairs shower trickles, a booster pump is likely the answer.
Booster pumps are common in Bay Area homes on hills, at the end of a municipal line, or in multi-story buildings where gravity and distance reduce pressure before the water reaches you.
The simple test:
If your water comes from a well on your property, you need a well pump. If your water comes from the city but arrives weak, you need a booster pump.
Can You Have Both?
Yes — and some properties do. A home on a well with a long run of pipe or significant elevation gain may have a well pump to draw the water and a booster pump to maintain pressure across the property. In those cases, the two work together: the well pump supplies the water, and the booster pump ensures it arrives with enough force.
Sizing Matters — for Both
The most common mistake we see with both pump types is incorrect sizing. A well pump that's too small can't keep up with demand; one that's too large short-cycles and wears out fast. A booster pump that's too large creates noise and stress on your pipes; one that's too small doesn't solve the problem.
Proper sizing depends on your well depth, static water level, pipe diameter, number of fixtures, and elevation. A professional assessment takes the guesswork out — and prevents you from paying for more pump than you need.
